  • Frank were a colossal flop pop group from 2006, a spin-off from the TV show 'Totally Frank'. The show ran for two series and followed a gigging girl band starting out in the industry. Their album was actually not without merit, written entirely by the pop powerhouse team that was Xenomania (Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Saint Etienne, etc.) at the time. We got The Saturdays soon after Frank came and went, and there's much to compare, but Frank's ace up the sleeve was the songwrting, which is on full display here. You can pick this album up on the cheap now (about 20p on Amazon Marketplace, for example) and you'll find a very decent bunch of girlband pop tracks, in particular the sassy 'Money In My Pocket' (previously recorded by another non-starter pop act, Mania), the shimmering mid-tempo after-glow of 'Silence' and one of Xenomania's finest compositions, the sugar-rush epic 'Never Left A Girl'. Also in the "quite good, actually" pile, I'd place 'Turn It Up', which was ear-marked for single number 2 before 'I'm Not Shy' stalled at #40 in the UK singles chart. So, Frank. Not perfect, but the tunes weren't bad. 6/10.
