  • The best Snares release to date, despite being only a 4 track EP. We begin with Ego DSP, pounding basslines skitter into existence over dark, brooding sci-fi-sounding synths, eventually giving way to a spooky vocal sounding like it's being delivered by a mad scientist from a 1950's American b-movie "we could communicate with advanced telepathy from the bottom of the ocean to the seven forty seven". This leads into an awesome albeit brief acid riff and a barrage of glitchy samples being used as manic percussion. A pretty, stunted melody comes in during the last 20 seconds or so.Track 2 the eponymous masterpiece of the set, begins with eye-watering, beautiful melodies that start slow and rise in emotion and volume, from this point on it threads into the realms of absolute genius that I didn't think even Aaron Funk was capable of. The sped-up Snoop and Dre samples, how the hell did he know that would work, especially in contrast to the seriousness and melodic atmosphere of the the track. I won't go into massive detail about the final two tracks but they are in the same mood and of just about the same quality. The title-track stands out the most, but all of these tracks stand alone as amazing pieces of work. It seems Venetian Snares has stepped up his game. He's one of the only people out there making fairly experimental music that actually has some emotion to it, unlike let's say, Autechre.
