Becoming aware of Bill Nelson's body of works via his musicianship on albums such as David Sylvian's 'Gone To Earth' has always left me rather frustrated. His sublime guitar work is often overshadowed on solo releases by studio noodling and uncool pop/rock synthesis. This album, however, makes up for all his scratchy solo output in one fell swoop. It's hard to understand how this album comes together to create a whole; most tracks are just fragmentary (almost all with long fade-ins / fade-outs); one tiny idea or feeling is explored briefly then slowly packed away in velvet; all the weird titles betray his personal interest in the Occult; the sheer length of the listening experience (a double CD in this incarnation, with many extra tracks that are seamless in their merging into the original album). And yet the effect is amazing, like the best of ambient coupled with the best of minimal instrumental coupled with monastic psalms coupled with something divine. When I first heard The Cult's 'Love' it blew me away, this, on the other hand, converted me to an as yet undiscovered faith. One of the Ten going with me to my desert island.
